Designing products experiencing dynamic loads is a challenge faced by practicing engineers in a wide spectrum of industries. This ranges from appliances through large wind turbines to offshore oil rigs. It is important to design systems deterministically. At the same time, product needs to get to market on time with quality and reliability and within target product costs. |
This webinar focuses on the optimal use of simulation and experimentation in modal analysis. Modal analysis is a system identification method that can be used to determine the natural frequencies, damping and mode shapes of a physical system, be it a gas turbine, wind turbine, automotive wheel, bridge, offshore structures. Modal Analysis can be performed on a virtual prototype and physical prototype. The tools and methods of modal analysis vary depending on whether it is done on a virtual or physical prototype. |
This webinar will be a live demonstration of modal analysis performed on a set of physical prototypes and computer models. The concepts that will be demonstrated include: |
- What is Modal Analysis? |
- Why Perform Modal Analysis? |
- Finite Element Approach to Modal Analysis? |
- Gaps in the Finite Element Approach |
- How to use Experimentation to Bridge the Gaps? |
- Sensors, Instrumentation and Software for Experimental Modal Analysis? |
- Correlation of Finite Element Analysis and Experimental Modal Analysis? |
- A Quick Overview of Mathematics and Physics of Modal Analysis |

July 2008 |
Chennai, INDIA |
The SAE organized a Two Day Top Tech Programme on July 4th and 5th in Chennai. The course was offered by two experts from TechPassion and Kistler who spoke about finite element based modal analysis and bridging simulation with experimental vibration testing. |
The phenomenal response to the programme from automotive industry was a clear indicator of the speed at which the Indian auto industry is adopting simulation and state of the art NVH technologies. |
The programme titled "Modal Analysis in Virtual Prototyping and Product Validation" covered a broad array of topics including sensors, sensor selection, theory and practice of FEM for modal analysis, experimental modal analysis, fea-test correlation. A number of case studies from automotive industry was presented to audience along with live demonstration for better understanding of the experimentation. |

NAFEMS UK Conference |
June 2008 |
Cheltanham, UK |
TechPassion presented a paper on the use of simulation and experimentation in the design of an automotive exhaust system. This study was performed on a product that is already in the market to explain a methodology to bridge the gaps between simulation and testing.
Following the success of the previous event, held in 2006, the NAFEMS UK Conference 2008 was the country’s premier conference on Simulation Technology for the Engineering Analysis Community. Co-sponsored by the IMechE, BSSM and the Institute of Physics Stress and Vibration Group, it brought together leading industrial practitioners, consultancies, academic researchers and software developers with a common interest in engineering analysis.
This two day conference covered the current best practices and state-of-the-art in FEA and CFD and associated technologies, providing attendees with the most comprehensive overview of the technology available.
The conference aims to increase awareness and provide a discussion forum for topics that are important and relevant to engineering industrialists and academics.

October 2007 |
IISc, Bangalore |
Dhanushkodi, Managing Director of TechPassion was invited to talk on the topic of Quality Practices in CAE. The talk explained about the importance of validation as an important step to improve the quality of CAE methods. He explained the importance of closing the loop on simulation results using experimental methods. This can achieve increased productivity and accuracy and can lead to significant cost reductions in product designs. He discussed two case studies of the use of this methodology in industry. The case studies presented were the belt-driven servomechanism with applications in machine tool and semi-conductor industry and the durability testing of automotive wheels. |
